Simply put, rheumatism is swelling. It is characterized by swelling and pain found on the muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. The term is used for a variety of related ailments in the past. Yet recently, rheumatism was subdivided into several conditions, which gave rise to more specific ailments.

Hippo crates in his Aphorisms speaks of gout as occurring most commonly in spring and autumn, and mentions the facts that women are less liable to it than men. Why the uric acid is found in excess is not understood by the allopathic physicians. Uric acid is formed in the system in the process of nutrition and is excreted by the kidneys. In a patient suffering from gout, the quantity of uric acid is found to be much more than normal. In a paroxysm of gout, the body appears to get rid of a lot of uric acid and there appears to be some relied but that is purely temporary.

The roots and seeds of the castor are effective in reducing joint pains. They are effective both as an external application as well as an oral medicine. For external application, a decoction of its roots is prepared and applied to the rheumatic swelling with potash mixed in it. A poultice of its seeds can also be applied on the swellings with the same effect. For oral administration, a paste of the kernel of castor is boiled in milk and given to the patient.

Some have found gin and raisins to be incredibly helpful. A minority of people find that it doesn't help, but most people seem great benefit, even for those who received no benefit from prescription drugs.

Many medical doctors find this hard to swallow. Many write it off as a placebo effect, but too many incredible recoveries have resulted, stories that haven't been seen for placebos.

This group comprises the various types of arthritis which are mainly inflammatory , not mechanical, in nature. They usually result from an auto-immune condition, which causes the body's immune system to go haywire and attack the joints and other parts of the body. E.g. rheumatoid arthritis (RA), SLE (skin, kidneys, joints, brain), psoriasis (skin, joints), ankylosing spondylitis (back, heart), gout (joints, skin, kidneys), rheumatic heart disease/fever (joints, heart, skin). All these conditions require different forms of treatment.

As the symptoms of fibromyalgia are vague and generalized, diagnosis is difficult and frequently incorrect.

As a sufferer may also have other nerve and muscle disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, the diagnosis may further complicated. There are no tests yet available to specifically diagnose fibromyalgia, so the diagnosis is generally made after simply ruling out other conditions.

The rosemary herb is used in a slightly unconventional manner in the Ayurvedic treatment of rheumatism. The leaves and inflorescence of the rosemary have a strong odor like that of camphor. These parts of the plant are used to produce large amounts of perspiration in the regions where the rheumatic pain exists. These vapor baths are beneficial in reducing, and even eliminating, the pain.
